Shipyards — a programme for startups

We support future founders and entrepreneurs by providing a variety of resources and guidance to start and run their new businesses. Five phases designed to maximise the viability of the startup path from inception to market scale.

Why Shipyards

The path to becoming a pioneer is filled with hurdles and steep learning curves

Shipyards focuses on helping founders get the information they need to excel from lab to funding and from lab to market — creating optimal teams and delivering products that survive contact with customers.

Each phase has entry criteria, a deliverable set and an honest exit conversation. We would rather tell a founder in Inceptor that the market is not there than let them spend two years finding out the expensive way. That conversation is the most valuable thing we offer.

Five phases

A series of five programmes, each with a gate

Select a phase to see what it demands and what you leave with.

Phase 1

Pioneer

A ten-class introductory course on becoming an entrepreneurial pioneer and what it means to be one. Founders leave with a written problem statement, a customer hypothesis and an honest self-assessment of what they can and cannot build alone.

Three ways technical startups usually end

Each phase gate is designed around one of these failure modes.

01

Building before validating

The most common ending. A founder spends eighteen months on a product nobody was waiting for, because building is comfortable and asking strangers hard questions is not. Inceptor exists to force that conversation in week three, not month eighteen.

02

Founding on unresolved IP

Work done during employment, in a university lab or with an unpaid collaborator has an owner, and that owner is often not you. Our IP clinic resolves this before a term sheet does it for you, expensively.

03

Raising against a story instead of a system

Investors fund evidence of a working loop: acquisition, activation, retention, revenue. Accelerator will not let you open a data room until that loop is instrumented and honest.

Applications

Open for the Summer and Autumn cohorts

Pioneer runs three times a year and is the entry point for everyone. If you already have a validated problem statement and early customers, you may apply directly to Inceptor — tell us so in your application and include the evidence.

  • Pioneer: rolling admission, ten classes, no equity taken
  • Inceptor: quarterly gate, requires a written problem statement
  • Incubator and Accelerator: by review, with partner resources attached
  • Post Modern Mentorship: open to any Shipyards alumnus indefinitely

Have an idea and some technical ability?

Pioneer is ten classes and costs you nothing but attention. It is the cheapest way to find out whether the idea holds.
